The Seattle Mariners Sign Ryne Stanek to a One-Year Contract

In an effort to strengthen their bullpen, the Seattle Mariners have signed reliever Ryne Stanek to a one-year contract. This move is crucial for the Mariners as they aim to make a return to the playoffs after falling short in the AL Division Series in 2022. Stanek, a 32-year-old right-hander, brings a wealth of postseason experience to the team, having made 23 postseason appearances, with all but two of them coming during his time with the Houston Astros over the past three seasons.

During the 2022 season, Stanek posted a 3-1 record with a 4.09 ERA in the regular season, following an impressive performance in 2021 where he went 2-1 with a remarkable 1.15 ERA. His 1.15 ERA in 2021 marked the lowest in Houston history for a pitcher with at least 50 innings. Notably, Stanek began his career with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he was utilized as one of the pioneer relievers to be employed as an opener. His 56 starts of two or fewer innings set a record for the most in major league history.

Unfortunately, the Mariners also faced a setback on the pitching front as they were forced to place right-hander Jackson Kowar on the 60-day injured list due to a right ulnar collateral ligament tear. Kowar was acquired by the Mariners in a trade with the Atlanta Braves on Dec. 3, along with minor league right-hander Cole Phillips, in exchange for outfielder Jarred Kelenic, left-hander Marco Gonzalez, and first baseman Evan White.

The addition of Ryne Stanek to the Seattle Mariners’ roster provides a much-needed boost to their bullpen as they strive to make a return to the playoffs. With Stanek’s postseason experience and impressive track record, the Mariners are hoping that he will be a valuable asset in their quest for success in the upcoming season. Despite the setback of Jackson Kowar’s injury, the Mariners remain optimistic about their prospects and are determined to overcome challenges as they work towards their goal of playoff contention.
