The Rise of Joshua Kimmich: Germany’s New Captain

In a surprising move, Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich has been named the new captain of Germany’s national team. This decision comes after his predecessor Ilkay Gündogan, along with several other senior players, decided to retire from international duty following Euro 2024.

At just 29 years old, Kimmich is set to lead Germany in upcoming Nations League matches against Hungary and the Netherlands. Although he hasn’t previously held the role of captain for Bayern or the national team, he has shown his leadership qualities by stepping in when needed, especially in the absence of other key players.

Backing up Kimmich as vice-captains are Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger and Arsenal forward Kai Havertz. These two players will provide additional support and experience to Kimmich as he takes on the new role of captaincy.

Former captain Gündogan, who was appointed by then-coach Hansi Flick last year, decided to retire from international duty after a successful Euro 2024 campaign where Germany reached the quarterfinals. His departure, along with other high-profile retirements, has paved the way for Kimmich to step up and lead the team.

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann sees Kimmich as the “logical successor” to Gündogan as captain. The team is moving forward with a mix of experienced players and new talent, with Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen set to take over as the new starting goalkeeper.

As Germany prepares for the next chapter in international football, all eyes will be on Joshua Kimmich as he leads the team into a new era. With a blend of experience, talent, and leadership, Kimmich is poised to make his mark as the new captain of Germany’s national team.
