The Evolution of Suspension Design in Formula 1

In the world of Formula 1, where innovation and optimization are key, teams are constantly seeking ways to gain a competitive edge. When it comes to suspension design, Ferrari has taken a unique approach for the upcoming season. While many expected the Italian team to follow the trend of switching to a pull-rod suspension system, similar to Mercedes and Aston Martin, Ferrari has decided to go in a different direction.

Rather than making the anticipated switch to a pull-rod suspension, Ferrari has focused on making interesting changes to its suspension setup to better suit the layout of its SF-24. One of the key modifications made by Ferrari is the alteration in the length of the chassis, which has been lengthened, leading to a shortened gearbox casing and rear crash structure. This design change has allowed Ferrari to maintain approximately the same dimensions overall while optimizing the performance of the car.

The alterations made by Ferrari to the position of the pull-rod intersecting the bodywork have provided the design team with more freedom to create sloping sidepod bodywork and improve the flow into the coke bottle region. These changes have not only enhanced the aerodynamic performance of the car but have also allowed for a more efficient passage of airflow around the vehicle.

Additionally, Ferrari has made subtle changes to wishbone fairings, winglets, and rear brake duct outlets to further capitalize on the modifications made to the suspension system. These adjustments have not only improved the overall aerodynamic efficiency of the car but have also provided a direct boost in performance.

While Ferrari has taken a unique approach to suspension design, McLaren has also been focused on unlocking more performance through modifications to its suspension system. The team has maintained the overall DNA of its suspension arrangement but has made changes to enhance aerodynamic output for the new season.

One of the significant changes made by McLaren is the repositioning of the suspension members and steering arms at the front of the MCL38. By adjusting the placement of the steering arms behind the rear leg of the lower wishbone, McLaren has optimized the inboard mounting points for the wishbone and pull-rod to improve airflow behavior. These modifications are aimed at increasing aerodynamic efficiency and overall performance of the car.
